Columbia Valley

Located in eastern Washington and extending down along the Columbia River into northern Oregon, the Columbia Valley is a huge AVA that occupies a good portion of the state. Even though Washington is the wettest state in the nation, the Cascade Mountains blot out the influence of the Pacific and the entire region is warm, dry and sunny. In an AVA this huge, the vast majority of land is not used for growing vines. However, the Columbia Valley is a dominating force in Washington’s wine industry, producing a full 99% of the state’s grapes. With its vast production, the region is known for its variety of wines – Syrah in particular is on the rise.

The Columbia Valley may be most famous for the three smaller AVAs within its borders – Red Mountain, Walla Walla, and Yakima Valley – but there are plenty of other excellent areas within the large AVA. The Canoe Ridge vineyards, for example, are located on the right bank of the Columbia produce excellent Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay, although these grapes are shipped to Walla Walla for production.
