Russian River Valley

Arguably Sonoma’s finest appellation, the Russian River Valley gets its name from the Russian traders that settled on the Northern California Coast in the state’s early history. Vineyards have grown in this part of Sonoma County since the early 1800s, and it continues to be a very good segment of the entire region. The Russian River Valley gets frequent coastal fog coming up from the Pacific Ocean, making it much cooler than its neighboring appellations to the north, south, and east. The fog enters the valley by following the Russian River up from the coast to the west. As a result of this microclimate Pinot Noir excels, and Pinot Gris and Chardonnay prosper as well.
