Walla Walla Valley

Situated at the eastern edge of the Columbia Valley, Walla Walla was home to some of the first grapes in Washington. “Walla Walla” means “many waters,” and the valley gets its name from the name from the number of tributaries that flow down out of the nearby Blue Mountains into the Walla Walla river itself. The temperature in this region is higher than in surrounding areas, and the high rainfall differentiates the area from the rest of the Columbia Valley. In fact, there is so much rain that vines are cultivated without irrigation, unusual in the semi-arid eastern part of the state. In the 1970’s, premium wineries began to make their home in Walla Walla and the AVA began a slow rise to fame. In recent years, the region has experienced staggering growth, and the number of acres under cultivation more than doubled between in 1999 and 2001. Walla Walla today is known for its small, premium wineries and for its Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Sangiovese. [Content provided by Bottlenotes]
