Yakima Valley

Located in the east of Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley is a densely planted AVA that produces nearly a third of Washington’s grapes. The largest varieties here are Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and White Riesling. The landscape here is filled with rolling hills and gentle south-facing slopes ideal for vines; the soil is silt-loam and gravel at low elevations with more clay at higher ones. Yakima Valley has also played an important role in the history of Washington winemaking. At the southern end of the Valley is Prosser, a small community surrounded by wineries. Prosser is the home of the Washing State University Research Station, which conducted research on growing vinifera vines in Washington’s unusual climate. In the past few years, Washington’s growing wine industry has made Prosser a popular destination for tourists in this new American wine country. [Content provided by Bottlenotes]
