Petite Sirah

The Petite Sirah, known as Durif in its native France, truly found its home in the warm Sierra Foothills of California. During prohibition, when California’s wineries closed to heed the Volstead Act or 18th amendment, vineyards continued to produce the Petite Sirah, which, thanks to its hardy thick skin could survive long train rides across the country where enterprising vintners could produce their own wines (up to 200 gallons) at home. The deep purple wine that comes from the thick skins of the Petite Sirah grape is intense and peppery with strong tannins that helps wines made with Petite Sirah age for up to several decades. It is also an excellent grape to blend with other reds, transferring its full body and deep color to the hybrid wine. [Content provided by Bottlenotes]
